Artist Talk/Public Discussion with Mamela Nyamza at tanzhaus NRW: “HATCHED ENSEMBLE – fifteen years after HATCHED, thirty years into Democracy”
In collaboration with Tanzhaus NRW, Balindile ka Ngcobo moderated an artist talk with the renowned South African choreographer, dancer, and activist Mamela Nyamza following the German premiere of Nyamza’s new dance piece, HATCHED ENSEMBLE on 24th of May. Titled “HATCHED ENSEMBLE – fifteen years after HATCHED, thirty years into Democracy”, the talk focused on the processes and contexts between Nyamza’s solo work HATCHED (2007) and its new ensemble version. Mamela and Balindile discussed with dancers from the ensemble how the political conditions for Black, queer people in South Africa have changed since it became a democracy in 1994, and meditated on questions about the representation of Black female read and queer bodies and how body politics are navigated between the so-called ‘global South’ and ‘North’.
